Why Your AC Remote Works But No Cooling Happens

You press the ON button. The AC remote responds. The indoor unit light turns on.Air starts blowing.

But… no cooling.

This is one of the most common complaints we receive at Alpha & Omega Trinity Pte Ltd. Many customers assume the air-conditioner is “working” because the remote responds and the fan runs. However, cooling depends on multiple internal components — not just the remote signal.

In this article, we explain the real technical reasons why your AC remote works but no cooling happens — and what you should do next.

1️⃣ Thermostat Setting Is Incorrect

Sometimes the issue is very simple.

If your remote is set to:

  • Fan mode

  • Dry mode

  • Temperature set too high (e.g., 27–28°C)

The AC will blow air but not activate full cooling.

What to check:

✔ Ensure mode is set to Cool (❄ snowflake symbol)✔ Lower temperature to 22–24°C✔ Increase fan speed

If cooling still doesn’t start after 5–10 minutes, the problem is deeper.

2️⃣ Outdoor Condenser Not Running

Cooling requires both indoor and outdoor units to work together.

If the outdoor condenser is:

  • Not receiving power

  • Faulty capacitor

  • Compressor not starting

  • Tripped breaker

The indoor fan will blow air — but no cooling happens.

Common causes:

  • Burnt capacitor

  • Faulty contactor

  • PCB board issue

  • Compressor overload trip

This requires professional inspection.

3️⃣ Refrigerant Gas Leakage

Low refrigerant is one of the most common reasons for “fan running but no cold air.”

When gas level drops:

  • Cooling becomes weak

  • Room takes very long to cool

  • Ice forms on copper pipe

  • System may shut down automatically

⚠ Important: Refrigerant does not finish by itself. If it is low, there is a leak.

Proper repair involves:✔ Leak detection✔ Pressure testing✔ Vacuuming✔ Correct gas charging

Simply “top-up gas” is not a permanent solution.

4️⃣ Compressor Failure

The compressor is the heart of your AC.

If it fails:

  • Indoor unit runs

  • Outdoor fan may run

  • But no cooling cycle starts

Signs of compressor issue:

  • Loud humming sound

  • Breaker trip when starting

  • Outdoor unit very hot

  • No pressure difference in system

Compressor replacement is a major repair and must be done by certified technicians.

5️⃣ Dirty Air Filter or Evaporator Coil

If airflow is blocked:

  • Cold air cannot circulate properly

  • Cooling efficiency drops

  • Ice may form on coil

  • System works harder

A heavily clogged filter can make you think “no cooling,” even when the system is functioning.

Maintenance recommendation:

✔ General servicing every 3–4 months✔ Chemical cleaning if heavily clogged✔ Annual system inspection

Preventive maintenance saves compressor cost.

6️⃣ Faulty Thermistor or Temperature Sensor

Modern AC systems use sensors to detect room temperature.

If the thermistor:

  • Sends wrong reading

  • Is disconnected

  • Is damaged

The system may think the room is already cold and stop cooling prematurely.

This is a hidden issue and requires electrical testing.

7️⃣ PCB (Control Board) Malfunction

Your remote communicates with the indoor PCB board.

If the PCB:

  • Receives signal

  • Turns on fan

  • But fails to trigger compressor relay

You get airflow without cooling.

PCB issues often show:

  • Random blinking lights

  • Error codes

  • Inconsistent operation

Board diagnosis requires professional tools.

Why You Should Not Ignore This Problem

Many users continue operating the AC even when cooling is weak.

This can lead to:

⚠ Compressor damage⚠ Higher electricity bills⚠ Overheating components⚠ Full system failure⚠ Expensive replacement

Early diagnosis prevents major breakdown.

How Professionals Diagnose the Problem

A proper inspection includes:

✔ Checking power supply to outdoor unit✔ Measuring refrigerant pressure✔ Testing compressor amp draw✔ Inspecting capacitor condition✔ Verifying PCB signal output✔ Checking temperature sensor resistance✔ Inspecting airflow and coil condition

Without testing instruments, guessing the problem can cause unnecessary repair costs.

Real Case Example

We recently attended a condo unit in Singapore where:

  • Remote working

  • Fan blowing

  • No cooling

Another contractor had recommended full gas top-up.

After inspection, we found:❌ Faulty outdoor capacitor✔ Replaced capacitor✔ System restored✔ No gas required

Correct diagnosis saved the client significant cost.

When Should You Call a Technician?

Call for professional help if:

  • Cooling does not start within 10 minutes

  • Outdoor unit not running

  • Ice forming on pipe

  • Breaker trips repeatedly

  • Strange noise from outdoor unit

  • Water leaking excessively

Do not wait until full breakdown.

Final Advice

If your AC remote works but there is no cooling, remember:

Remote working ≠ Cooling system healthy.

Cooling depends on:

  • Refrigerant cycle

  • Compressor operation

  • Outdoor condenser

  • Electrical components

  • Clean airflow

Ignoring early warning signs may lead to costly repairs.
